4 Lies you’ve been fed about your low back pain!

Here we go! It’s a spicy topic today!!! Nothing fires me up like misinformation coming from what should be a trustworthy source…. well, other than misinformation that meant to make you feel like crap. And this topic has all of it!

Without further adieu, Here are the 4 lies you’ve been fed about your low back pain . (And don’t forget to read below so you know the truth too!)

  1. That those 5 or 10 pounds you’ve gained has something to do with your pain

  2. That your exercise routine is probably causing your pain and you should stop lifting weights, mountain biking, gardening, running, etc.

  3. That it always requires surgery or injections

  4. That once you’ve injured your back, it’s there for life!

Your Weight and Your Back Pain

Ok, Let me set the record straight. Our bodies are meant to fluctuate. Our bodies are meant to be resiliant and to withstand change! Five or ten or even twenty pounds means nothing to your muscles, bones and joints. Believe me, friend!

Now 100 pounds of weight gain or 200 or an abrupt change to a sedentary life, or a tiny human kicking around inside your belly… sure that can be a factor. But that’s not the story most of our clients with back pain are led to believe.

exercise and back pain

We are made to move! The body loves movement and strength!! Sure, we should be smart about it and ease our bodies into the routine with time to adapt. And we should absolutely listen when our body speaks to us via pain, tightness, etc. But stopping such a beautiful healthy habit simply because some old school health care practitioner said it was bad is a no go in my books.

Instead, let us help you figure out exactly what type of exercise or movement within the exercise might be aggravating things and we can take a short well-intentioned break during your recovery (if it’s even necessary at all). And even better- let us pinpoint exactly why you have low back in the first place! (See below for more on this)

Surgery or Injections for Low Back Pain

Eye roll.

In my 12 years as an Athletic Therapist, I have absolutely had clients who NEEDED surgery or NEEDED an injection to be able to tolerate their pain and any form of treatment. But the vast majority of clients with low back pain don’t need either!

The majority of things that can cause low back pain are absolutely treatable without surgery or injections. When you see a therapist like those at our clinic, they use their expertise to release exactly what needs to be released, provide stability exactly where it’s needed, mobilize joints that are stiff, etc, etc. This might involve working on your back, or your hips, or your ankle or even your shoulder blade! Repeat after me: “The root cause isn’t always where you feel the pain!”

Life-time low back injuries

Oh give me a break! Like I talk about above, MOST episodes of low back pain are not structural and can absolutely be fully resolved with hands on treatment from a super smart therapist (like ours). When you fix the real root cause of the issue, it is no longer an issue! Meaning you will be able to go back to all of the things you love to do without having to think twice about your back.

In fact, I have a client I’m currently seeing who was in last month to see a spine surgeon. You know what the surgeon said!? “If you’re seeing results with the treatment you are receiving, let’s hold off on surgery and check back in in a few months” (Talk about amazing advice from a great practitioner!). Because even he knows that not all injuries require surgery and not all injuries will be life long.
